Alyssa Downs

Instructor, Spanish

  • Education: B.A. in Spanish, Appalachian State University
M.A. in Romance Languages with a concentration in College Spanish Teaching, Appalachian State University
  • Courses Taught: Beginning and Intermediate Spanish and ACA 122
  • Biography: I began teaching at Coastal Carolina Community College in 2013, and love being an instructor here. I moved to eastern North Carolina from Boone, NC, where I tutored and taught Spanish as a graduate student at ASU. While there I had the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program in Madrid, Spain, and also to take a short-term mission trip to the Dominican Republic. I am not a native speaker of Spanish but have loved the language since I first began studying it in high school. I try to encourage my students by telling them if I was able to learn Spanish in the classroom, they certainly can also. My interests outside of work include traveling, hiking, and spending time with my husband, Patrick.

Sandra Fernández Mula

M.A. in EF Teaching Training for Secondary Education, Universidad de Murcia, Spain
M.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures (Major Spanish / Minor TESOL), West Virginia University, WV
  • Courses Taught: Elementary Spanish I and II (all formats, including online), Intermediate Spanish I and II, and ACA 122
  • Biography: My love for languages started when I visited England. I was especially interested in the language and culture, and that made me pursue my degree in English. I graduated from college in Spain and completed my first master’s degree there. I love to travel so I naturally jumped at the chance when I was accepted into the master´s program in Spanish and TESOL at WVU. I spent two years there and I learned a lot, especially about working as an educator. There, I realized how much I love teaching Spanish and giving students the opportunity to learn more about my culture. I still enjoy travelling home to spend time with family and friends. Some of my hobbies are volleyball, reading, outdoor activities and going to the beach.
