Virtual Career Center

The Virtual Career Center is an online instructional resource. Visitors can learn about the Career Center and its variety of resources to help with career planning, training, and finding employment through a variety of mini-lesson orientations and activities.

You have the flexibility to learn when it is convenient for you from your own computer. Each orientation session includes activities to evaluate how well you reviewed and interpreted the information presented. If you are unable to answer a question for an activity, contact the Career Center and we will be glad to assist you in finding the answer.

Instructors

All of the orientation sessions are available to instructors and students both online and in the form of a classroom workshop activity. Instructors may schedule a classroom workshop by completing the Instructor Classroom Worshop Request Form. Whether you choose a classroom workshop or online orientation, the information is designed to be relevant to your students’ needs.

NOTE to ACA students accessing this video for the class assignment:

If the video moves too fast for you to read the content, you will be able to pause the video once you open it in order to read the information contained on each slide by using the navigation player buttons at the bottom of the window.  Additionally, you may click in the bottom right corner of the video to enlarge the video screen to make it easier to read. While the animated video does contain some sounds, it is not necessary to hear the audio to answer the questions.  Answers to the questions on the assignment are all found within the video and on the Career Center’s website in various locations.  It will be necessary to search through the Career Center’s website to find all of the answers or you may stop by the center during business hours, or contact us by phone or email for help.  The main purpose of this activity is to help familiarize yourself with the host of services that the Career Center on campus offers students free of charge.

If you have problems loading the video or receive a message that you need flash player, double check that your ACTIVEX filter is disabled.  At the top of your screen in the web address bar, you will see a blue circle with a line through it.  Click on that blue circle to disable your ACTIVEX filter as necessary to load the video on your screen.  If you continue to experience difficulty opening the video, it may be the result of too many users trying to access it at one time or the website may be temporarily down for maintenance where the video is being hosted.  Simply wait awhile and come back to it.  If you still need assistance, contact the Career Center for help at (910) 938-6761, by email at careerservices@coastalcarolina.edu,  or stop by in CE108 during business hours and a staff member will help you.

Orientation to the Career Planning Resources - Assessment

    Now that you have learned about the career assessment program and what it has to offer you in terms of providing information to assist you with career and education, you should follow the instructions in the orientation for taking the Assessment within the time frame specified by your instructor and print your results for credit.
  4. Activity 2b: Project: Developing a Career Plan
    Once you have taken the assessment exam, you will want to research the categories provided and identify at least three occupations to save to your FAVORITES for further research. Identify what level of education, what courses and where you may obtain the education needed for one of the three careers you have chosen. Does your occupation have a career ladder to other positions in the future through additional experience and training? If so, identify what opportunities exist in your occupation for career advancement in terms of title, position and salary as applicable. Additional information may be obtained from other websites outside of the assessment program by looking under career development resources on the career center main webpage.

English 114 Career Engagement Module

If you are an English 114 student assigned to complete the Career Engagement Activity, please start with the first activity and begin completing the activities in order until you have finished them all.  Your instructor will provide additional materials that you will need to read as part of the Career Engagement Module for class and will also provide you with the final exam after the module is completed.  Please follow the instructions and be sure to read the assignments and materials provided in class and throughout the Career Center Website carefully as you will need the information in order to answer the questions both in the activities as well as for the final exam.  If you have difficulty finding answers and you have reviewed the website and materials, you may contact Career Services using the phone number and/or email provided on our website and we will be glad to direct you to help find the answers.  You are welcome to stop in the Career Center during business hours if you require additional assistance locating information on the website.  Please allow plenty of time to read and locate information required for completion of the activities.

Do not wait until the day the activities are due in class to begin inquiring about answers that you could not find.  Everything that you will need to complete the modules is contained on the Career Center website, within the assignment and through supplementary materials provided by your instructor.

    Now that you have reviewed the basics of writing and effective cover letter, it is time to practice your skills! For this activity, follow the guidelines in the orientation to develop a basic cover letter template for a position of your choice.  Remember that cover letters function best when tailored to each position as you apply.  Your cover letter should highlight how your skills and experiences relate to the position you are applying for. When you are finished, save your cover letter and print it out.  If you need guidance, consult with a Career Center staff member.

  5. Activity 4c: Project: Editing and Formatting Your Cover Letter
    This activity requires that you have developed a cover letter template and had it critiqued by two other people.  One of the two people must be a career center staff member. For this activity, you will be asked to review the content and format of your cover letter and make necessary corrections so that you have a professional working cover letter that may be used to apply for an actual job vacancy.  It should contain no errors, be centered on the page with proper paragraphing, signature and should convey your attributes and skills. Once completed, you should have your cover letter reviewed by the two additional people to be certain there are no further errors or corrections and save your final template for future use.
