Courses in this section prepare students for careers relative to the environment, plants, and animals. Several of these courses have State or Federal certifications available.
The horticulture program encompasses the study and practical application of many varied subjects in the fields of horticulture. The curriculum consists of identifying and selecting plant materials; propagating, planting, and growing planting materials in appropriate places and in the correct manner; properly maintaining plant materials; and managing the nursery and greenhouse. A textbook is required.
This course is designed for commercial growers, nurserymen, ground crews, and groundskeepers. Training will be provided in the proper method of landscape design, plant selection, installation, cultivation, and maintenance. Special emphasis will be placed on agriculture, turf management, and horticultural applications. This is a hands-on course that includes a practical application class project.
Shellfish Farming & Lease Management
Learn how to make money in the shellfish farming business in North Carolina and make the most from a shellfish lease. This course includes emerging technologies in oyster and clam mariculture along with shellfish sanitation requirements. Instruction is designed for full-time and part-time shellfish leaseholders, potential leaseholders, hatchery operators, dealers, and shellstock shippers. No previous experience is required. Students must furnish life jacket and be able to travel to other sites within Onslow County. No textbook is required.
Sports Turf Management
This course will address the fundamentals necessary to provide quality sports turf and skinned-area repair on athletic fields realizing that fields are built to be played on. Course concentration will be on solving turf problems as efficiently and economically as possible.
Small Animal Care & Management
The pet and companion animal industry is a rapidly growing segment of our economy. Employees with knowledge and skills to work with small animals are constantly needed. This course is designed to prepare students for an entry-level position as a professional animal care technician.
Course topics include professional grooming techniques, basic animal anatomy, animal safety, first aid, parasite recognition, and skin disorders. A textbook is required.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I & II
This course follows prescribed training to meet certification requirements of the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission. Graduates of this course will be eligible to take the state exam for grades I and II. A textbook is required.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III & IV
This course follows prescribed training to meet certification requirements of the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission. Graduates of this course will be eligible to take the state exam for grades III and IV. A textbook is required.
Course length: 72 hours.
Water Pollution Control System Operator Continuing Education
This course follows prescribed training to meet annual certification requirements of the North Carolina Water Pollution Control System Operators Certification Commission. These courses are approved by the Commission for grade I, grade II, grade III, and grade IV.
