Billing and Coding Specialists are a vital part of today’s healthcare system.  With vast amounts of information passing through medical offices every day, specialists are in demand to keep it organized and coded, allowing doctors to be as up to date as possible with their patients.  Employment in health information technology occupations is expected to grow 20 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. While job prospects as a whole are quite favorable, the BLS specifically references certification as a preference among many potential employers for these occupations. Coastal Carolina Community College offers entry and advanced level certifications, each of which can be completed in under six months.

Medical Coding Specialist Program

Offered online and on campus (morning, afternoon, or evening classes), this comprehensive program leads to national Certified Professional Coder® (CPC®) certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) credential is the gold standard for medical coding in physician office settings and held by more than 60,000 coding professionals. CPC®’s are critical to compliant and profitable medical practices and typically earn 20% more than non-certified coders.* The CPC® increases the chance of being hired and retained in a competitive job market.

A Certified Professional Coder has proven by rigorous examination and experience that they know how to read a medical chart and assign the correct diagnosis (ICD-9 and ICD-10), procedure (CPT®), and supply (HCPCS Level II) codes for a wide variety of clinical cases and services.

Begin a new career and open the door to an exciting medical field. This five-month program has been designed to meet the health care industry’s growing need for professionals with billing, coding, and insurance processing skills. Inpatient Hospital Facility Medical Coding

This online program leads to a Certified Coding Specialists (CCS) certificate. The CCS certification is the more advanced of two available medical records coding certifications. CCS coders possess advanced skills in International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding systems, and possess advanced knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and pharmacology. CCS coding specialists generally work in a hospital setting reviewing patient records and assigning numeric codes to procedures and diagnosis before submitting data to insurance companies or government Medicare or Medicaid specialists.

Coding accuracy is highly important to healthcare organizations, and has an impact on revenues and describing health outcomes. In fact, certification has become an implicit industry standard. Accordingly, the CCS credential demonstrates a practitioner’s tested data quality and integrity skills, and mastery of coding proficiency. Professionals experienced in coding inpatient and outpatient records should consider obtaining this certification.
