This is a series of courses combining classroom training with practical on-the-job application conducted in partnership with the City of Jacksonville’s Community Development Department. We will provide you with the most current information, methods, practices, and procedures being used in the construction industry and we will emphasize safety, building codes, construction theory, and hands-on “real work” in every craft. In addition to the classes taught in the building construction series, the new series will include procedures and techniques used in demolition and renovation.
This new emphasis on salvaging homes is the result of a nationwide trend to rehab and renovate houses built prior to the 1970’s. Many of these homes have sound foundations but may have small rooms, unorganized floor-plans, too few bathrooms, or just not enough living space. Oftentimes it’s more cost effective to rehab or add on to a house that is too small than it is to sell the house and buy a new one. Students completing all five parts (in any order) will be awarded the Building Construction Series Certificate of Achievement. Some common construction tools are required for each course. All classes are intended for the beginner .
