Watercolors: Course Description
Learn the fine art of watercolor painting. This studio style class will apply hands-on methods to explore the "English Method" of watercolors using tube paints on watercolor paper. Introductions to the following topics will also be covered:
- A brief history of watercolor painting
- Paint Schools which includes English, US, European, and 20th Century
- Materials which includes paints, brushes and papers
- Techniques which includes washes and glazes, wet in wet, dry brush, diluting and mixing, and designing palettes.
Acrylic Painting
Acrylic painting, invented in the mid-20th century, is the newest of all painting mediums. This class will include some basic lecture and demonstration, but is primarily designed as a studio style class. Three basic areas of instruction will be introduced:
- choosing and using the correct materials
- covering the basic properties of color and mixing colors, as well as what constitutes a good beginner's palette
- various methods in paint application.
Additionally, brief instruction on how to properly display and market finished work will be made available to interested students.
Acrylic & Watercolor
Students in this combination class may explore watercolor painting and/or acrylic painting separately or as a mixed medium. The provided material list gives a general guide as to what supplies will be used throughout the course. Students may not need all supplies, depending on their interest. Supplies will be addressed in greater detail at the first session.

About the Instructor - Jim Phillips
Jim Phillips was born in Raleigh, NC and has lived in a number of communities across North Carolina, but spent the past 30 years living near the coast in Jacksonville, North Carolina. His formal education was a BS in Commercial Design, which earned him a long and satisfying career. He retired in 2007 with 35 years in the education field as a graphic artist. Now he is following his true passion as a painter. He has been painting and experimenting with different art mediums ever since his college years, however, over the past couple of decades he has become most comfortable with watercolors, acrylics, and pen and ink.
