Program Philosophy and Mission
The Instructors' Academy is designed to enhance the community college instructor's craft of teaching by applying the strategies from each of the modules into the instructor's classroom via reflective thinking. It is our sincere hope that this Academy proves to be a meaningful and worthwhile experience for all participants. We all have something to contribute and to learn, and we must all support each other.
Upon completion of this course, faculty will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of the current concepts and research findings about the needs, interests, motivations, and unique characteristics of adult learners.
- Compare and contrast the differences between youths and adults as learners and the implications of these differences for teaching and learning.
- Apply methods of instruction that can be used to enhance various learning styles such as visual, auditory, active, and passive.
- Apply methods of instruction that can be used to promote whole brain learning.
- Apply techniques that can be sued to promote student-centered instruction.
- Identify and apply appropriate instructional objectives.
- Generate information and formal assessment techniques.
- Demonstrate the format of a lesson plan.
- Evaluate the instructional strategies that are most effective.
- Apply effective verbal and non-verbal communication in the classroom.
- Apply effective listening techniques.
- Apply effective questioning techniques.
- Develop high order questioning skills.
- Apply effective instructional techniques that facilitate learning.
- Apply techniques that enhance instructional media.
- Evaluate the characteristics of effective teaching.
