Onslow County natives may think nothing of being able to ask for help finding a particular item at the grocery store or ordering something off of a menu, but when you do not speak English, those tasks become huge challenges.
“ESL (English as a Second Language) classes offered by Coastal Carolina Community College provide many people the ability to increase their language skills and improve their quality of life in the community, workforce, and their relationships with others,” said Elmer Price, Director, Basic Skills Program and Academic Studies Center.
Coastal Carolina Community College will offer two sessions of ESL classes this fall. Sessions will begin Monday, August 18, 2014, from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at Living Hope Community Church on Hargett Street in Jacksonville or 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Coastal’s main campus.
All potential students interested in participating in an ESL class are required to attend a five hour orientation. The orientation will focus on furthering the education of learners from diverse backgrounds. It will introduce students to some of the content they will cover in their ESL class as well as addressing areas of socialization. Additional information covered will include citizenship, language, and community awareness.
There will be morning and evening orientation sessions. Morning sessions are 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and evening sessions are 4:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Students interested in participating in an orientation session should stop by the Academic Studies Center at Coastal Carolina Community College located in the Continuing Education building to register. Registrations for orientation can be completed any Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Orientation dates are: September 5, 9, and 23; October 3, 17, and 21; and December 2 and 12, 2014.
